Following the announcement of the election schedule for eight reserved seats in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, the ruling PML-N has named its candidates. Polling is set for August 24. The party, which holds a majority with its allies, has put forward names for five women's seats, and one each for technocrats, overseas Kashmiris, and Ulema. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Wednesday announced its candidates for seven of the eight reserved seats in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The party named Pir Mazhar Saeed Shah for the seat reserved for Ulema-i-Din (religious scholars).
Mr. Shah was a member of the outgoing assembly on the same reserved seat and belongs to the All Jammu Kashmir Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, which supported the PML-N in the general elections.
The party had previously confirmed its nominations for other seats. Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gillani, a former education minister, was awarded the ticket for the technocrats' seat. Chaudhry Abdul Rehman Arain, a UK-based businessman and president of the PML-N's UK chapter, was nominated for the overseas Kashmiris' seat. The four candidates for the women's seats are Sehrish Qamar, Maryam Zaman, Maryam Idrees, and Riffat Aziz.
The election schedule for eight reserved seats in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has been announced. According to the schedule, nomination papers can be submitted on August 20, with scrutiny of the papers to take place the same day.
Appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers can be filed on August 21, with decisions to be made on August 22. The last day for the withdrawal of candidature is August 23, after which the final list of candidates will be issued.
Polling for the reserved seats is scheduled for August 24. The eight seats include five for women, one for Ulema and Mashaikh, one for overseas Kashmiris, and one for technocrats.
