Hamid Mir Warns of Potential August 7 Pakistan Shutdown

Journalist Hamid Mir has issued a warning about a potential "August 7 Pakistan Shutdown" following the recent PTI protests.

KARACHI: Violent clashes erupted between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters and police in Karachi on Wednesday evening during nationwide protests marking the third anniversary of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s arrest.

The unrest began near a shopping mall in the Saddar area, where PTI workers had gathered in response to the party's call for demonstrations. Tensions escalated when police blocked protesters from advancing, leading law enforcement to fire tear gas shells and use baton charges to disperse the crowd. Some protesters responded by hurling stones at police vehicles and personnel.

The confrontations caused significant traffic disruption on major roads around the Karachi Press Club, Governor House, and Metropole for several hours.

Police launched a crackdown, detaining several PTI workers and leaders, including the party's Sindh General Secretary, Dr. Masroor Ali Sial. The operation eventually led to the dispersal of the demonstrators.

The protests in Karachi were part of a series of coordinated demonstrations held across the country, with rallies also organized in Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and other cities.

Imran Khan was arrested on August 5, 2023, and is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.
