Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Qatar on Wednesday to offer condolences for the demise of former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who ruled the Gulf state from 1995 to 2013 and passed away on Sunday.
The visit takes place amidst renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States, which have escalated significantly since an April ceasefire. The Middle East conflict, which began in late February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, saw Iran retaliate with attacks on Israel and US interests across the Gulf. Recent fighting has jeopardized a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war, which was mediated last month by Qatar and Pakistan.
The confrontation resumed earlier this month following attacks on ships in the Gulf, for which Iran has been blamed. The US military is reportedly targeting coastal areas where Tehran asserts control over the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar, which hosts the largest American military base in the Middle East, reported that it was targeted by an Iranian attack on Sunday.
