Pakistan has floated an emergency tender to procure a liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo for delivery on July 15-16. This action follows a Qatari shipment being forced to turn back due to escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
State-owned Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) issued the emergency tender after government approval on Wednesday to replace the cancelled cargo, which was scheduled to arrive later this month. Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted after the United States conducted a second consecutive day of strikes on Iran. This military escalation followed Iranian attacks on vessels operating in the strategic waterway, including an LNG tanker, prompting heightened security concerns and disrupting energy shipments.
A vessel transporting LNG from Qatar to Pakistan reportedly reversed course earlier this week before completing its passage through the strait, leading to the cancellation of the planned delivery. To strengthen fuel supplies, Pakistan had earlier purchased an LNG cargo for delivery on July 10-11 for $17.37 per million British thermal units (mmBtu). This marked Islamabad’s second spot-market acquisition within two weeks as it sought to offset disrupted Qatari deliveries caused by the regional conflict.
Pakistan depends on Qatar for the overwhelming majority of its LNG imports under long-term agreements, making the country particularly vulnerable to supply interruptions since hostilities in the Middle East intensified in late February. To prevent domestic gas shortages, Islamabad has already turned to the more expensive spot market for two LNG shipments in recent weeks after contracted supplies from Qatar were affected.

پاکستان کے لیے قطری ایل این جی کارگو لے جانے والا ایک جہاز بھی اس ہفتے کے اوائل میں آبنائے ہرمز سے اپنا سفر ترک کر چکا ہے۔ بدھ کو، امریکی فوج نے کہا کہ اس نے آبنائے ہرمز میں جہاز رانی کی آزادی کو برقرار رکھنے کے لیے ایران پر اضافی حملے شروع کیے ہیں، جس کے جواب میں ایران نے کویت اور بحرین پر جوابی حملے کیے ہیں۔
تازہ ترین کشیدگی منگل کو تین کارگو جہازوں پر مبینہ حملے کے بعد سامنے آئی اور یہ امریکی صدر ڈونلڈ ٹرمپ کے اس اعلان کے چند گھنٹے بعد ہوئی کہ ایران کے ساتھ عبوری جنگ بندی “ختم” ہو گئی ہے۔
CENTCOM نے X پر ایک پوسٹ میں کہا، “امریکی سینٹرل کمانڈ کی افواج نے آبنائے ہرمز میں جہاز رانی کی آزادی کو مزید خطرے میں ڈالنے کی ایران کی صلاحیت کو کم کرنے کے لیے ایران پر اضافی حملے شروع کر دیے ہیں۔” پاکستان اپنی ایل این جی کی ضروریات کے لیے قطر پر بہت زیادہ انحصار کرتا ہے۔
