PM’s task force completes 85 of 99 maritime reform points

The Prime Minister’s Maritime Reforms Task Force has completed 85 out of 99 designated reform points, according to reports from July 4. The reforms, described as significant achievements for Pakistan's maritime sector, are aimed at boosting the national economy and enhancing port development. The Pakistan Navy is also associated with the reform initiative, which is being carried out under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Additional details have emerged regarding the 85 reform action points completed by the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms. The reforms were implemented by a committee established in December 2024, comprising experts from the Ministry of Defence and the maritime and logistics sectors, including the National Logistics Corporation (NLC).
Of the 14 remaining action points, 11 are reportedly in the final stages of completion, while three are being addressed under a long-term strategy.
Key reforms completed include:
- Preparation of a National Ports Master Plan
- Implementation of a uniform port tariff
- Improvements in transit trade and expansion of port capacity
- Introduction of a modern monitoring system for economic zones
- Removal of encroachments from Karachi Port land
- New customs rules for transshipment and bunkering
- Measures to strengthen the local shipbuilding and ship repair industry
- Finalisation of a five-year provincial fisheries development plan
Officials also noted that ship recycling has resumed after an eight-year hiatus. Furthermore, the establishment of the National Dredging and Marine Services (NDMS) has been highlighted as a step towards self-reliance in port dredging, reducing dependence on foreign operators.
The achievements of the Prime Minister’s Maritime Reforms Task Force, which completed 85 out of 99 reform points, were reportedly accomplished over a period of 18 months.
