Colombia has advanced to the World Cup round of 16 after securing a 1-0 victory over Ghana, eliminating the African team from the tournament.
Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute of the match. Despite controlling the game and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Colombia struggled to extend their lead. The team registered 20 attempts with eight on target, while Ghana managed eight shots with none on target.
Following the loss, Ghana’s manager Carlos Queiroz attributed the defeat to his team’s inexperience and inability to remain calm under pressure. “I felt really quickly that some of the Ghanaian players were fearful. They were not cool, calm, and collected when the pressure hit,” Queiroz stated, adding that it is a “very young team.” He acknowledged that Colombia was the better side and deserved the win.
Colombia will now face Switzerland in Vancouver in the next knockout stage.
