New Zealand Wins Test Series as England Captain Ben Stokes Retires
New Zealand defeated England by 160 runs in the third Test at Trent Bridge on Monday, securing a 2-1 series victory.
The win marked New Zealand’s fourth series success in England in 20 attempts and was England’s first home series defeat in three or more Tests since 2012.
The match was the final international appearance for England captain Ben Stokes, who announced his retirement from international cricket on Sunday. The 35-year-old all-rounder cited feeling “burnt out” after four years as skipper but confirmed he will continue to play for his county side, Durham.
In his final match, with England set a target of 373, Stokes promoted himself to open the batting and scored 30 runs from 20 balls before being dismissed. New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell was named player-of-the-match for his unbeaten century.

In their pursuit of 373 runs, England were all out for 212 in their second innings. Resuming on the final day at 103 for four, England’s batting lineup struggled. Joe Root was run out for 18, while Jamie Smith was the top scorer for the innings with 60 runs.
For New Zealand, Zak Foulkes claimed three wickets, while Nathan Smith and Mitchell Santner each took two. Daryl Mitchell was named Player of the Match for his second-innings century and for taking five catches in the Test.
