Cricket Returns to Olympics in 2028 with Men’s and Women’s T20

Cricket is set for a historic return to the Olympic Games at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics, marking its first appearance in 128 years.

The event will feature both men’s and women’s T20 tournaments, with six teams competing in each category for gold, silver, and bronze medals. Each team will consist of a 15-player squad, and all matches are scheduled to be held at a specially constructed cricket stadium in Pomona.

To determine the final participants, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced an Olympic Qualifier event for 2027. According to reports, in the women’s competition, Australia, Great Britain, India, and South Africa have nearly secured their places, with the remaining spots to be decided through the qualification process.

The host nation, the United States, will be given a chance to qualify either directly or through rankings, subject to meeting specific ICC standards. The West Indies will not compete as a unified team; instead, Caribbean nations will have their representation decided through a separate qualifying system.

The ICC Chairman described the inclusion as a landmark moment for the global development of the sport.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finalised the qualification pathway for the men’s and women’s T20 cricket tournaments at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

For both tournaments, four of the six available spots will be awarded to the highest-ranked teams from four continents—Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania—as of the T20I rankings on 31 December 2026. The host nation, the USA, is eligible to qualify provided it is ranked among the top 15 teams. The final spot will be determined by an eight-team ICC Olympic Qualifier event in 2027.

For the Pakistan men’s team to qualify directly, it must be the highest-ranked team in Asia by the deadline. If not, it will need to win the 2027 qualifier tournament.

The Pakistan women’s team has missed out on direct qualification. Pakistan’s women will now have to compete in and win the 2027 qualifier to secure a place in the Olympics.
