Israel Strikes Hezbollah in Lebanon Days After Security Deal

The Israeli military announced on Sunday it had destroyed underground infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in a village in southern Lebanon. In a joint statement, the Israeli prime minister and defense minister said the strike targeted a 200-meter-long tunnel in the town of Majdal Zoun, which they claimed contained hundreds of weapons and launchers. The United States was reportedly informed before the attack.

The strike took place two days after Lebanon and Israel agreed to a US-brokered security arrangement aimed at de-escalating hostilities. The agreement includes provisions for a phased Israeli withdrawal from some areas in southern Lebanon, to be accompanied by the deployment of the Lebanese army.

Hezbollah condemned the Israeli attacks early on Monday as a “flagrant” violation of the ceasefire, stating that it reserves the right to “defend its homeland and people.”

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem had previously rejected the security agreement, describing it as a “surrender to Israel” and affirming the group would continue its armed resistance. The Israeli military also reported a separate, recent strike on Hezbollah militants in the Nabatieh area of southern Lebanon.
