Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Shakes Cities Across Pakistan

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 was felt across several cities in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday, June 27. The tremors prompted residents to exit their homes and offices for open areas.

According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the earthquake’s epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 191 kilometres. Tremors were reported in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Muzaffarabad, and numerous other cities and towns.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage. The PDMA has alerted relevant district administrations to assess the situation and check for any potential damage. The authority has also asked citizens to report any earthquake-related incidents to its helpline at 1129.

The earthquake, which occurred at approximately 6:35 PM on Saturday, prompted a brief five-minute postponement of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly session in Peshawar.

While initial reports cited a depth of 191 kilometres, Pakistan’s national seismological centre later recorded the depth at 178 kilometres. The European Seismological Centre reported the magnitude as 6.0, slightly higher than the 5.9 magnitude reported locally.

Tremors were also confirmed in several additional towns and districts, including Mianwali, Chakwal, Jhang, Shangla, Buner, Mardan, Charsadda, Swat, Kohat, Malakand, Bajaur, Hangu, Lower Dir, South Waziristan, Wana, Diamer, and parts of Neelum Valley.
