Mourning Processions Held Across Pakistan for Muharram 9 Amid Tight Security

Mourning processions for the 9th of Muharram were held across Pakistan on Thursday to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions. Extensive security measures were implemented in various cities, with police, Rangers, and other security personnel deployed along procession routes.

In Karachi, the main procession was scheduled to depart from Nishtar Park at 1 p.m. and conclude at Imambargah Hussainia Iranian in Kharadar. Authorities stated that 20,181 police personnel were deployed in the city, with 6,843 assigned to the main procession. Key roads, including M.A. Jinnah Road from Gurumandir to Tower, were closed to traffic.

In Lahore, the central procession began from Pandu Street in Islampura, passing through designated routes including Purani Anarkali and the AG Office before reaching Imambargah Khaima Sadat. It was planned to conclude back at Pandu Street after evening prayers.

The central procession in Peshawar started from Imambargah Hussainia Hall at 10 a.m. A security plan involving 12,000 personnel was put in place, featuring three-layered security, deployment of snipers on high-rise buildings, and 1,000 traffic officers to manage vehicle flow.

In Islamabad, the main procession was planned for the afternoon from Markazi Imambargah Asna-e-Ashri in Sector G-6, with procession routes completely sealed. Processions were also held in other cities, including Multan, where the main procession emerged from Imambargah Mumtazabad with CCTV monitoring along its route.

In Lahore, the central 9th Muharram procession proceeded along its traditional routes. Meanwhile, 80 separate processions were held in Multan. In Rajanpur, security for the day’s events was enhanced with the use of more than 600 cameras to monitor the processions.

Processions for the 9th of Muharram were also held in cities including Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Chiniot. In Peshawar, security personnel were seen guarding the procession route, while some participants in Islamabad were observed carrying portraits of Iranian leaders.

Across the country, processions featured ‘Zuljanahs’ (horses) and large flags with religious emblems. Separately, senior PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb visited several procession areas.

In addition to major cities, mourning processions for the 9th of Muharram were also reported in Rohri, Sindh, and the Faisal Town area of Lahore. In Chiniot, a ‘Khayma Basti’ was established for the occasion.

Available reports from Lahore indicate that a total of 80 separate processions were scheduled across the city.

In Multan, 80 processions and 144 Majalis were scheduled for the 9th of Muharram. Processions were also reported in Rohri, emerging from the Shah Iraq Imambargah, and in Mansoorabad.

A drop in the price of gold has been observed in the Pakistani market, corresponding with a fall in global prices. Official confirmation of the new local rates is awaited.
