Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday for a one-day official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Iranian president, accompanied by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, was welcomed with a guard of honour at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad.

Following a one-on-one meeting and delegation-level talks, the two leaders addressed a joint press conference. Prime Minister Shehbaz described the discussions as “very productive” and akin to a “family reunion,” emphasizing that the two nations have consistently supported each other in difficult times.

During the briefing, PM Shehbaz addressed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed last week between the United States and Iran, highlighting Pakistan’s role as an “honest and sincere mediator” in the process. He stated that Iran’s ballistic missile programme was not part of the MoU, asserting it was “never on the table.” The prime minister argued there should not be double standards regarding missile capabilities.

He also expressed condolences for civilian casualties in the recent conflict and conveyed his regards to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. PM Shehbaz announced he would visit Tehran next week to pay respects to the late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and reaffirm Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran.
