Government to Discontinue Fuel Subsidy Programme
The federal government has decided to discontinue its fuel subsidy programme for motorcyclists, small-scale farmers, and transport operators. The decision was announced following the seventh meeting of the National Steering Committee on Fuel Subsidy, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday.
According to an official statement, the committee noted that international fuel prices have fallen sharply, and the benefit has already been transferred to consumers through lower domestic prices. In light of these market conditions, the committee agreed to end the subsidy scheme, pending approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The subsidy package was originally introduced when fuel prices increased earlier in the year. Under the programme, owners of motorcycles and small vehicles received subsidies, public and cargo transport operators were given monthly financial assistance, and small farmers benefited from a diesel subsidy.
The Deputy Prime Minister directed relevant authorities to document the lessons learned from the initiative to help strengthen future public welfare programmes.
