Karachi police on Monday registered a case under terrorism charges in relation to the vehicle-ramming incident outside a Defence Housing Authority (DHA) imambargah on Sunday night. The First Information Report (FIR) names the driver of the Suzuki pick-up and three of his companions.

The case was filed on the complaint of the imambargah’s security head, who alleged the driver deliberately broke through security barriers and rammed into the tent of mourners as part of a “planned scheme and criminal conspiracy.” The FIR claims the act was not accidental but a “deliberate rehearsal of a larger terrorist action.”

This contrasts with an earlier police assessment from South DIG Syed Asad Raza, who stated the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed. A total of 23 people were injured in the incident, including the suspects, who have been taken into custody and are receiving treatment at a hospital. One victim remains in critical condition at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

In the aftermath of the incident at a Defence-area Imambargah in Karachi, religious scholars have alleged the event was an act of terrorism. In response, the Sindh Chief Minister has ordered a transparent investigation into the incident.
