Ahead of formal US-Iran negotiations in Bürgenstock, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir met with a US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance. US presidential adviser Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were also present during the discussions, which focused on the agenda for the upcoming talks under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

The Pakistani delegation is also expected to meet with their Iranian counterparts, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Iran has indicated that its priorities for the negotiations include the situation in Lebanon and the matter of its frozen assets.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir have arrived in Switzerland to participate in the second phase of negotiations between the United States and Iran, meeting with a high-level American delegation led by US Vice President JD Vance.

The talks, held in Bürgenstock, are aimed at implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. Pakistan is playing a key role as a facilitator in the process. The meeting between the Pakistani leadership and the US delegation, which also included Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, was held in a cordial atmosphere.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office stated that the country will continue its role in supporting and promoting the implementation of the understanding reached between Iran and the US, reaffirming its commitment to peace, stability, and diplomatic solutions in the region. The Foreign Office noted that Pakistan’s facilitation is a manifestation of its principled, balanced, and constructive stance, which included hosting initial rounds of talks that led to the Islamabad agreement.

Prime Minister Sharif is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with delegations from Iran, Qatar, Switzerland, and the US. The Iranian delegation, named ‘Minab 168’, is led by chief negotiator Baqar Qalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. A Qatari delegation is also participating in the negotiations. The Swiss Foreign Ministry formally welcomed the Pakistani delegation upon their arrival.
