A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came under severe strain Saturday as Israeli strikes in Lebanon killed at least 20 people, including a family of four and a Lebanese soldier. The attacks, which targeted southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, drew condemnation from Hezbollah, which accused Israel of hundreds of violations and warned the aggression “will not pass without a response.” Israeli forces have refused to withdraw from southern Lebanon, though military leaders were reportedly instructed to hold fire. Hezbollah stated it engaged Israeli troops attempting to infiltrate Lebanese territory and would not allow Israel “freedom of movement” in occupied areas.

Despite the renewed violence, which has brought the total killed in Lebanon to over 4,000 since March, diplomatic efforts continued. Late Saturday, an Israeli army official confirmed the military had received new directives to cease fire. The order came as diplomats met in Switzerland to advance a broader US-Iran understanding aimed at halting the regional conflict.
