The United States and Iran have signed a historic peace agreement, dubbed the ‘Islamabad Peace Deal’, following successful mediation by Pakistan, heralding a potential end to months of bitter animosity.

The memorandum of understanding was signed electronically by US President Donald Trump, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who served as the mediator. The signing took place two days ahead of its original schedule for an in-person event in Switzerland.

Following the agreement, Prime Minister Sharif held a phone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. In a post on X, the premier described the call as “warm and most cordial,” and congratulated the crown prince on the deal. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Saudi crown prince, in turn, congratulated Sharif, stating that the “tireless efforts” of the prime minister and the Field Marshal led to the successful agreement.

Both leaders agreed on the necessity of remaining vigilant against any attempts to undermine the peace process. They stressed that the next phase of negotiations must be guided by a firm commitment to dialogue and diplomacy. Sharif also thanked the crown prince for the kingdom’s steadfast support and wise leadership, which he said were vital guiding forces. The two leaders also expressed satisfaction with bilateral relations and looked forward to strengthening their economic partnership.
