Fatima Sana Becomes First Pakistani Woman to Play in The Hundred
LONDON: Pakistan women’s team captain Fatima Sana is set to make history as the first Pakistani woman to play in The Hundred after being drafted by the Birmingham Phoenix.
The 24-year-old all-rounder, who was initially overlooked in the tournament auction, was brought in as a replacement for Australian player Lucy Hamilton. The move is a significant boost for Pakistan cricket, especially after earlier controversy surrounding reports of a potential “silent ban” on Pakistani players in the competition.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) later clarified that players would not be excluded based on nationality. “Fatima Sana is a real statement of intent. She is Pakistan’s captain, an international-class pace bowler and a brilliant replacement,” said James Thomas, Phoenix performance director.
Sana’s contract is reportedly worth at least £15,000. Her availability for the tournament, which runs from July 21 to August 16, may be limited as Pakistan is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for a white-ball series from July 23 to August 4.
