Mirra Andreeva Becomes Youngest French Open Champion Since 1992
Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva won her first Grand Slam title on Saturday, defeating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in a one-sided French Open final.
At 19, Andreeva becomes the youngest women’s singles champion at Roland Garros since Monica Seles in 1992. She is also the first player, male or female, born after 2005 to win a major tournament.
Both players appeared nervous in the blustery conditions on centre court, trading four consecutive breaks of serve to start the match. However, the Russian found her consistency first, pulling away to take the opening set 6-3. Andreeva continued her dominant play in the second set, and despite a brief fightback from Chwalinska, she sealed the victory and the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.
The defeat ended a remarkable run for Chwalinska, who won nine matches after starting in the qualifying rounds to become the first qualifier to reach the final in the Open era. Her performance will see her ranking soar from 114 to 21.
“I’ve been watching Roland Garros on TV since I was very, very young, so it’s also a big dream of mine to win this tournament,” Andreeva said during the trophy ceremony. Chwalinska praised her opponent, joking, “Congrats to Mirra, you’re such an incredible player. You’re so young and talented, it’s so annoying.”
