The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a high-level alert for the next 12 to 14 hours, warning of potential flash floods, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and landslides across various parts of the country. Widespread rain with strong winds and thunder is expected in Islamabad, numerous districts across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
The authority specifically cautioned that rising temperatures combined with rainfall in northern mountainous regions could trigger GLOFs and landslides, posing a significant risk to key routes including the Karakoram Highway and Naran Road. Hailstorms and strong winds may damage crops and infrastructure. Provincial and district administrations have been placed on high alert, and tourists are strongly advised to check weather and road conditions before travelling to northern areas.
Updated: 8:09 PM PKT — June 4, 2026
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more intermittent rain with gusty winds and possible hailstorms for Thursday night and Friday. The weather system is expected to affect Islamabad, Rawalpindi, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.
The PMD attributed the conditions to moist currents from the Arabian Sea and a westerly wave expected to persist until June 5. The forecast follows significant rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Rawalpindi receiving up to 54mm and Islamabad 44mm, while hot and dry weather prevailed in other parts of the country.
