Hostilities in the Gulf flared again on Wednesday as Iranian attacks on Kuwait damaged its international airport, killing one person and injuring more than 60 others. According to Kuwaiti authorities, the drone and missile attack prompted a temporary suspension of flights and also damaged diplomatic missions. The escalation is the latest to test a shaky ceasefire agreed upon in early April.

In response, the U.S. military conducted a new round of “defensive strikes” in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian boats near the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command denied that its bases in the region had been hit, stating Iranian ballistic missiles failed to strike their targets. The renewed conflict has sent global oil prices up by more than 2% as diplomatic efforts show little sign of progress.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated, with US forces targeting a military installation on Iran’s Qeshm Island. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for retaliatory missile and drone strikes on American interests, including the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, an airbase, and naval vessels. Reports indicated sirens sounded in Bahrain, Iraq, and Qatar following the attacks.

US Central Command stated that a significant portion of the Iranian assault was thwarted. According to American officials, two missiles aimed at Kuwait fell short, while three directed at Bahrain were intercepted by US and Bahraini air defenses. They also noted that some Iranian ballistic missiles failed to reach their targets. Separately, the US military reported disabling a Botswana-flagged oil tanker allegedly en route to Iran’s Kharg Island.
