Islamabad Revises Business Hours; Shops to Close at 9 PM
ISLAMABAD – The federal government has approved revised operating hours for businesses, markets, and public venues across the capital, with the new schedule taking effect from June 1.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Austerity Measures Monitoring and Implementation Committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Under the new timings, all shops, markets, shopping malls, and general retail outlets are required to close by 9:00 PM.
Restaurants, cafes, and other eateries have been permitted to operate until 11:00 PM, while marriage halls and event venues must conclude activities by 10:00 PM. However, takeaway and food delivery services are exempt from these time restrictions.
Essential services, including hospitals, pharmacies, fuel stations, and IT and telecommunications services, will continue to operate without any time limitations. Officials stated the revised timings aim to balance public convenience, manage energy consumption, and address seasonal challenges during the summer months. Provincial governments have been directed to ensure effective implementation of the new schedule.

The federal government has extended its countrywide austerity drive until June 13, citing longer daylight hours and rising summer temperatures as factors in its energy-saving policies. The measures were initially introduced on March 9 in response to a global energy crisis stemming from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
As part of the extended drive, a 50% reduction in fuel allowance for official vehicles, the grounding of 60% of the government fleet, and a ban on non-essential foreign travel for officials will remain in effect. Provincial governments have also been directed to ensure the implementation of these guidelines.
