The Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Lt. Gen. (R) Nazir Ahmed, has formally recognised the journalist who first brought the massive Kohistan financial scandal to light. In a special ceremony in Peshawar, senior Jang and Geo Group journalist Arshad Aziz Malik was awarded a special shield and certificate for his role in exposing the case.
The Jang and Geo Group broke the story on April 30, 2025, reporting the embezzlement of Rs 40 billion from government bank accounts in what has been described as one of the country’s largest financial scandals.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has returned over Rs 6 billion in assets to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in the first phase of a major recovery in the Upper Kohistan financial fraud case.
An extensive investigation revealed that more than Rs 37 billion in public funds were embezzled over nearly a decade through the manipulation of treasury instruments. The recovered assets include cash, precious metals, properties, and luxury vehicles. NAB has frozen assets worth over Rs 27 billion and recovered over Rs 10 billion through plea bargains after scrutinizing more than 1,500 bank accounts.
