Five Killed in Explosion at South Korean Aerospace Plant
SEOUL: Five people were killed and two others injured after an explosion triggered a fire at a Hanwha Aerospace factory in the South Korean city of Daejeon on Monday, authorities confirmed.
A fire official stated that the two survivors, one of whom was badly burned, escaped the facility on their own. The bodies of the deceased were severely damaged, complicating identification efforts, a health official said. The cause of the initial blast is currently under investigation.
The factory, operated by the defence and aerospace company, produces large propulsion engines and handles rocket propellants. Investigators’ access to the facility’s layout has been restricted as it is protected under national security laws.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called for all available resources to be mobilized in response to the accident and ordered a thorough investigation. A Hanwha Aerospace official confirmed the company is also investigating the incident.
