The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss Israel’s expanded offensive in Lebanon, following a request by France. The call for talks came after Israeli forces captured the historic Beaufort Castle, a UNESCO heritage site near the city of Nabatieh.

While acknowledging Israel’s right to self-defence, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said the continued military campaign and occupation of Lebanese territory could not be justified. The operation represents Israel’s deepest incursion into Lebanon in over 25 years and proceeds despite a frequently violated ceasefire agreement that took effect on April 17.

Israel’s Defence Minister has confirmed the capture of the historic Beaufort Castle, calling it a significant strategic achievement. In a statement, the minister said Israeli forces crossed the Litani River to seize the Beaufort ridge, a move deemed crucial for defending settlements in the Galilee region and ensuring the security of Israeli troops.

The operation, which was initially under an information embargo, represents the deepest Israeli incursion into Lebanon in over 25 years. The defence minister vowed that operations would continue to weaken Hezbollah and secure Israel’s northern border, adding that fighting in the area is ongoing. Lebanese officials have not yet issued a formal comment on the Israeli claims.
